The Nineteenth Century: Expanding the Parameters of Ukiyo-e

This image belongs to a rare set of prints depicting all types of marine life. The grain of the woodblock evokes the undulation of slow-moving water. The downward cast of the pupil of the eye conveys the sense that the carp is swimming determinedly into the depths, indicated by the band of black.
