A young mother carrying a cage in her hand looks up as her child tries to capture a firefly on his fan. Hunting fireflies was a popular pursuit in early summer, when iris, seen here in the background, came into bloom. Using a technique known as fuki-bokashi (blown shading), the printer has sprayed black ink onto the surface of the mica background—and masked over the insects themselves––to suggest their evening glow.
