Should I attend this conference?

1) Is this conference for me?

  • If you are concerned about American students not having the opportunity to develop a high degree of global competence in order to compete and collaborate in this interconnected world, this conference is for you.
  • If you are a policymaker, school board member, state and local education administrator, school principal, teacher, or, university faculty member/researcher, then this conference is for you.
  • Over 700 participants from 44 states and abroad attended our inaugural conference in 2008. Overall,  one-third identified themselves as K-12 teachers and nearly another one-third as district, state or federal education administrators.

  • See highlights from last year's conference.

2) My school currently does not have a Chinese program, should I still attend?

  • Yes! The conference will offer sessions and activities specifically designed for those planning to start a program, such as visits to Chicago Public Schools classrooms–the largest Chinese language program in the country.

  • NCLC breakout sessions and workshops will provide you with valuable information, resources and best practices for starting a new program and will connect you with other educators - ones who are just starting out, as well as educators who have had many years of experience.

  • Nearly a quarter of last year's conference participants did not have a program at the time.

3) My school already has a program, should I attend?

  • Yes! We have seen rapid growth of Chinese programs in the past few years, and our conference aims to provide a forum for improving the quality and sustainability of these programs.

  • A number of conference sessions will focus on practical issues such as curriculum, instruction and assessment, which are integral parts of any successful language program.

4) My school has had a program for over 10 years, is this conference for me?

  • Yes! The conference is a good venue to learn about new developments in the teaching of Chinese language and culture and the use of technology in the classroom. It is also a great opportunity to share your experience with others and increase the visibility of your program.

  • Last year, nearly a quarter of all conference participants who had an existing program had over a decade of experience in Chinese language training.
