COAL+ICE: San Francisco, September 4-23, 2018

Fort Mason Center for Arts and Culture, San Francisco, CA
September 4 – 23, 2018
U.S. Premiere

COAL+ICE is a documentary photography and video exhibition, co-curated by Magnum photographer Susan Meiselas and renowned exhibition designer Jeroen de Vries, featuring the work of over 30 photographers from around the world. COAL+ICE visually narrates the consequences triggered by the continued use of fossil fuels, following the trajectory of climate change from the dirty coal mines deep within the Earth, to the vanishing glaciers of the Greater Himalaya. The exhibition culminates in global consequences and an exploration of visionary solutions.

After exhibitions in China, and most recently Paris for the international climate negotiations, COAL+ICE will make its U.S. premiere September 4-23 at San Francisco’s Fort Mason Center for the Arts and Culture in conjunction with Governor Jerry Brown’s Global Climate Action Summit. As the federal government steps back in the international effort to combat climate change, COAL+ICE recognizes and supports the critical role of California—and like-minded states, municipalities, and businesses—to lead the way forward.

This September, climate change will take center stage in San Francisco. In addition to the exhibition, COAL+ICE will present a series of cultural events bringing together unlikely collaborators—prominent artistic, literary, environmental, business, and political figures—to call attention to the perils of not addressing global climate change, and to share their vision of a path forward. COAL+ICE events will occur both inside the exhibition space and around the city.

We are building a strong collegium of partners, including the State of California, and many cultural organizations, colleges and universities, media outlets, corporations, and environmental NGOs. We hope you will join us.

COAL+ICE is a project of Asia Society’s Center on U.S.-China Relations, in collaboration with the Asia Society Northern California Center.
