Liu Xiaodong

Liu Xiaodong was born in 1963 in Liaoning Province, China. He graduated with a BFA in Oil Painting from The Central Academy of Fine Arts in 1988. During 1998-1999, Liu also studied in the University of Complutense, Academy of Fine Arts, in Madrid, Spain. Liu started teaching in The Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing in 1994, and began participating in China’s independent film making movement since the early 90s. In 1992, he played a leading role in director Wang Xiaoshuai’s movie The Days (1994), which was listed by the BBC as one of the top 100 movies made in the past century. He was the artistic director for director Zhang Yuan’s film Beijing Bastard (1993), and worked with director Jia Zhangke in conceptually conceiving the movie Dong (2006) and Still Life (2006), the latter winning the Golden Lion for Best Film at the 63rd Venice Film Festival.

Liu Xiaodong’s paintings have been the subject of numerous exhibitions in international art fairs and museums all over the world, including the 47th Venice Biennial, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Bern Museum in Switzerland, Museum of Chicago Art Institute, and the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, as well as many esteemed collections, including Fukuoka Art Museum, San Francisco MOMA, Ullens Foundation, and Museum of Fine Arts Boston.
