Questions for Alibaba’s Jack Ma

As founder and CEO of Alibaba Group, Jack Ma heads China’s biggest ecommerce company. Headquartered in Hangzhou, China, Alibaba controls Yahoo! China, Taobao.com, the country’s top consumer web site, and Alibaba.com, the world’s largest business-to-business marketplace. Businessweek called him one of the “The 25 Most Influential People on the Web.”

During a two-week trip to the US to meet with prospective partners, including Google, Yahoo, eBay and Microsoft, Ma is coming to the Asia Society on Thursday, March 12 to discuss entrepreneurship, technological innovation and the future of the global ecommerce industry.

Have questions for “China’s Internet Godfather”? Wondering what he thinks about the current financial crisis or if he’s planning to crack the US market (and compete with eBay) with his auction site Taobao.com?

Post your questions here and Asia Society may share them during the discussion with Jack Ma.

  3. What are the important distinctions and advantages that Alibaba has over its competitors ( i.e. Sina, Sohu, and Baidu) in respect to its strategy for growth and its business model?

I am trying to understand why I, as an U.S. investor would find it wise to buy your stock again. I sold the small position I previously took. I have not bought stock in the other companies listed above.

    Thank you

  4. In an interview a few years ago with the SF Chronicle you talked about how eBay “lost the battle” in China, and that it would be very difficult for them to relaunch in China because of the mistakes they made.

If you were to launch Taobao.com here in the U.S., what steps would you take to make sure that Taobao doesn’t meet the same fate here in the US that eBay met in China?

  5. Mr Ma,
A while back I read about the Beijing [CRD] Cyber Recreation District Project [China Virtual Economy District] that was supposed to become a “Virtual world industry to help traditional industries become virtual enterprises.” It was supposed to provide a platform where international businesses could go into a virtual environment and sell or arrange to manufacture their real world custom made products. It was supposed to launch in 2008. Do you know if this will become a reality in the near future?

Mr. Ma, I’m a reporter from Chongqing Times, China. In the past two years, you kept silent to the mass media; however, people from different fields have been quite concerned with you and the development of Alibaba. On behalf of the concerned readers in Chongqing, I’d appreciate your answer to my following questions:

Although it’s spring in northern hemisphere, in many people’s eyes, Manhattan, where you stay now, is still in severe winter. In the last two days, a significant rebound occurred in the U.S. stock market, but it hasn’t stopped the controversy on whether the current U.S. economic atmosphere has sole. More over, you mentioned that “the darkest time of world economy has past already” recently. Based on the current U.S. economic situation you see during this trip, do you change your view, or still stick to your judgment?

Last August, you came to Jinyun Mountain of Chongqing to “keeping silent for 3 days”, thinking about “what’s the final purpose of an enterprise’s development?” How could you make yourself cool down and make this meditation when the whole world was anxious about the unprecedented terrible financial crisis? What conclusion did you learn from that?

As the leader in B to B field of China, what’s your opinion on the economic situation and B to B of Chongqing, and even the whole western China? Where are the development chances for the medium and small size companies in Chongqing under such financial crisis? As an inland city, how could Chongqing’s companies obtain more chances to go outside to the world?

  9. How do you thing of the future of Network service companies(in technology)?

  10. What steps can the government take to embrace the spirit of entrepreneurship, and what steps can the government take to foster innovation?

  12. Mr Ma,
What are your views on China India co-operation and competition?
What are Alibaba’s plans for India?
