Objects for Daily Use

Dishes, bowls, platters, cups, jars, bottles, and vases comprise some of the most common objects for daily use in both China and Japan. Many examples of ceramic objects for daily use have survived from East Asia. The development of strong, high-fired stonewares and porcelains with equally tough glazes has insured that many of these wares maintain much of their original beauty even after hundreds of years.

Many vessels that survive in public and private collections originally came from larger sets made for drinking tea or wine, for serving food and drinks, and even for imperial feasts and banquets. The appreciation of wines, teas, and cuisine has a long history in both China and Japan, and craftsmen developed a myriad of vessel forms and decorative patterns to enhance the visual appeal of food and drink.
