Imagine the kind of tearoom Sen Rikyû would create if he were alive today. The place, the kind of tea gathering, the participants—all sorts of things run through one’s mind. Here’s what I think: In whatever age, Rikyû would devise a magnificent presentation that offered us an intense spiritual experience. This tearoom, based on the theme of water, presents an image of floating in space, of a space that, at times, we do not even perceive as space. The water in the central vessel symbolizes the flow of time, history, and the foundation of life. In making this space, which reflects on nothingness (mu), I quietly pondered the life force of water and attempted to envision a certain form for a space for tea.
