Dance, the Spirit of Cambodia, a project of the Royal University of Fine Arts, Phonm Penh presented classical and folk dance and music from Cambodia during a 12-city national tour August 11-September 29, 2001. This coast-to-coast trip by the 41-member troupe marked the first time in more than a decade that the living traditions of Cambodian music and dance had formally toured in the U.S.A.


Repertory for the scheduled 28 public performances on tour included dance and music from Cambodia's folk and classical traditions and an extended excerpt from the Reamker dance-drama.


A project of the Royal University of Fine Arts in Phnom Penh, the project's Artistic Director is Proeung Chhieng, Vice Rector and Dean, Choreographic Arts.

AsiaSource spoke with some members of the creative team behind Dance, The Spirit of Cambodia, including Artistic Director Proeung Chhieng, Production and Lighting Designer Clifton Taylor, and Pam Tatge, Director of the Wesleyan Center for the Arts.

This project, initiated and produced by the New England Foundation for the Arts (NEFA) in partnership with Asia Society and Lisa Booth Management, Inc., is a public celebration of more than a decade of documentation, preservation and cultural exchange fostered between the Royal University of Fine Arts, US presenters, funders, and Cambodian-American communities.
