Ashok Soota is MindTree's Chairman and CEO. Prior to co-founding MindTree, Ashok started his career with the Shriram Group of Industries in India in 1965. His last assignment with the group (1978?1984) was as chief executive of Shriram Refrigeration, a company he was responsible for turning around. In 1984, he took over as president of Wipro Infotech when that company's size was Rs.70 million and subsequently led the growth of Wipro's information technology (IT) group to over Rs.10 billion, making Wipro the largest publicly listed IT company in India. He spearheaded the formation of Wipro IT group's strategic alliances including formation of a joint venture with the Acer Group of Taiwan. Ashok is an electrical engineer with an M.B.A. from the Asian Institute of Management in the Philippines.
Mr. Soota has been a leader of the IT industry. Positions held by him over various periods include the president of the Manufacturers' Association for Information Technology (MAIT) of India, chairman of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) for South India, and chairman of CII's National Committees for Electronics and Information Technology. He is also a member of the Advisory Council of World Intellectual Property Organization in Geneva and served as a member of the Indian Prime Minister's task force for development of the IT industry.
In recognition of his contributions to the IT industry, Mr. Soota was named the Electronics Man of the Year for 1992 by the Electronic Component Industries Association (Elcina), India's oldest and largest electronics association; IT Man of the Year for 1994 by Dataquest; and IT Man of the Year in 1997 by Computerworld magazine.
