Dewang Mehta is the President of NASSCOM (India's National Association
of Software and Service Companies), the apex body of computer software,
dotcom and I.T. service companies in India. Dewang Mehta is a qualified
Chartered Accountant, Cost & Management Accountant and has done
extensive research work in computer graphics.
In May 1998, Dewang Mehta was appointed as a member and spokesman
of the high powered National IT Taskforce set up by the Indian Prime
Minister to draft a National Informatics Policy. In 1997, Dewang
Mehta was awarded the `IT Man of the Year' Award by Dataquest Magazine.
He has also been awarded by Computerworld Magazine as `Software
Evangelist of the Year' for three years in succession in 1997, 1998
and 1999 and IT Man of the Year Award in 2000. Recently, Mehta was
awarded the 'Entrepreneur of the Year' award for the Year 2000 by
Ernst & Young. Dewang Mehta was selected as one of the 100 Global
Leaders of Tomorrow by Geneva based World Economic Forum in October
2000.
Mehta had earlier graduated in Computer Graphics from London in
1985 and has also done extensive work in the field of computer graphics.
His work in Ray Tracing and Fractals got him the 'Computer Graphics
Man of the Year 1991' award in London. In the last few years, Mehta
has written extensively (more than 1,000 articles) in the areas
of Politics, Economics, computer software and Internet for Journals
and newspapers in India and overseas. Mehta also anchors two T.V.
shows in India - "Computer Show" and "I.T. Digest".
These television shows have a viewership of more than 5 million
viewers.
Dewang Mehta has been influential with Government of India in amendments
to Indian copyright laws and introduction of cyberlaws. Mehta is
also Vice Chairman of Internet Users Community of India (IUCI).
Mehta was intrumental in convincing Indian Government is allowing
Indian companies to be listed on NASDAQ. Mehta has also been highly
influential in convincing the Indian government in allowing private
Internet Service Providers to operate in India as well as for allowing
Indian companies to be listed on overseas stock exchange. Mehta
is on the Government of India security Committee for clearing private
ISPs to have their own International gateways. Mehta is also on
several Public sector and private sector boards. He is also member
of the Andhra Pradesh State Planning Board, Himachal Pradesh State
Planning Board and on Board of Governors of National Institute of
Fashion Technology (NIFT). Dewang Mehta is also on the Governing
Council of Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT).
As the person at the helm of affairs at NASSCOM, Mehta's job includes
lobbying with Indian government and several other governments around
the world; Building a Global Brand Equity of the software and dotcom
industry of India and campaigning against software piracy. To increase
Indian software exports, Dewang Mehta has travelled and organised
more than 100 International Seminars around the world. These activities
have resulted in more than 150 formal joint ventures / strategic
alliances.
