Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer (MD & CEO), ICICI
Mr. K. Vaman Kamath is the Managing Director and Chief Executive
Officer (MD & CEO) of ICICI - a diversified financial services
company offering a wide range of products and services to corporate
and retail customers in India. ICICI has an asset base of over US$
17 billion and annual profits of about US$ 236 million, and its
principal business activities include medium and long-term project
financing, corporate finance, personal financial services and a
comprehensive range of financial and advisory services.
Mr. Kamath began his professional career in 1971 with ICICI, where
he worked up to 1988. Between 1988 and 1996 he worked for the Asian
Development Bank (Manila) and as Adviser to a large diversified
group in Indonesia. He returned to India in early 1996 to takeover
as Managing Director and CEO of ICICI. The strategic initiatives
and structural changes instituted by Mr. Kamath have helped ICICI
to redraw its boundaries and achieve a position of leadership in
the Indian financial sector. Under his initiative, ICICI became
the first Indian company and the second Asian bank to list on the
New York Stock Exchange.
Mr. Kamath holds a Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering
and a Masters in Business Administration from the Indian Institute
of Management, Ahmedabad. He presently resides in Mumbai and is
married and has as son and a daughter. His hobbies include tennis,
watching cricket and surfing the Internet. He is also an avid reader
and has lectured extensively both in India and abroad.
Mr. Kamath is a Member of the Governing Board on various educational
institutes including the Indian Institute of Management - Ahmedabad,
Indian School of Business, National Institute of Bank Management,
Manipal Academy of Higher Education and Entrepreneurship Development
Institute of India. He is also a Member of the Economic Times Editorial
Advisory Board and National Council of the Confederation of Indian
Industry. Mr. Kamath has also served on a number of important government
and quasi-government committees, instituted to formulate policy
in areas of national importance including infrastructure and shipping.
