Unit Assessment

Teachers:

Divide the class into two teams. Ask each team to create a modern version of “Going Upriver at Qingming Festival Time” and prepare a presentation. The painting should be based on an imaginary place, including a variety of markets that are labeled in Chinese. The presentation should explain how various forms of markets serve people’s needs.

Have the students put the paintings up on the wall, and ask them to read the store signs of the other teams’ paintings to see how much they can understand before they hear the other team’s presentation. Ask each team to present their painting first by role play; then ask students to defend their creation by answering questions from the other team in the class.

As a final, oral assessment, ask students to select one of their favorite sections from the scroll and present it in detail.

Students:

Decide on the title for each painting, e.g. 王镇新新市场图,小山夏天集市图. Cut and tape construction paper to make a 10″ x 5′ scroll for your painting, which is a smaller scale of the painting “Going Upriver at Qingming Festival Time.”

Discuss the types of markets and people’s activities you would like to include in your painting. Think of “Going Upriver at Qingming Festival Time”. Notice there are even stalls along the two sides of the bridge! Divide the painting into several sections. Each team member/artist will be responsible for the creation of one section, drawing pictures and preparing a description of markets and activities for the assigned section. Try to mix different types of markets to make your painting interesting. Make sure to include store signs in your painting.

Draw the painting and prepare for the presentation. Make sure that you expand your description to include how various forms of markets serve people’s needs. Put up your paintings on the wall.

Read the store signs of the other teams’ paintings to see how much you can understand before they give their presentation. Present your painting and answer questions from the other team. The class cannot wait to see your masterpiece!

Requirements:

  • Each artist should be responsible for the creation of one section of their team’s painting.
  • Each artist should be able to articulate the market or human needs supplied by their section.
  • Be creative and original!

Grading Rubric:
