Dr. Sherman E. Lee

Born April 9, 1918, in Seattle, Washington, Dr. Sherman Emery Lee received both a bachelors and master of arts from American University, and a doctorate degree from Case Western University. He is currently adjunct professor of art history at the University of North Carolina, and was guest curator of the Guggenheim Museum's exhibition China: 5000 Years. In his long and prolific career, Dr. Lee has served as curator of Far Eastern art at the Detroit Institute of Art, associate director of the Seattle Art Museum, curator and director of the Cleveland Museum of Art, and professor of art history at Western Reserve University.

As principal advisor to Mr. and Mrs. John D. Rockefeller 3rd, Dr. Lee encouraged them to begin collecting Asian art in earnest. Within a span of fifteen years, from 1963 to 1978, when the collection was donated to the Asia Society, Dr. Lee assembled one of the most spectacular private collections of Asian art in the United States. Dr. Lee remains a valued consultant to the Asia Society Galleries today.
