The poem on this painting by Shunshō’s pupil Shunkō is signed with Danjūrō V’s poetry name, Ichikawa Hakuen (White Monkey) “in his fifty-seventh year,” and signals Danjūrō’s retirement from the stage in 1796 (he had used the name Ebizō since 1791). In fact, he continued to act occasionally after this, using the name Hakuen. Many stars and top courtesans mixed with literati in amateur poetry clubs throughout Edo, and used pen names to identify their witty verse.
